The important thing about evacuating the (any) refrigeration system is, that the vacuum pump can pull  down to 28-30" of vacuum. Then the system should be able to hold that vacuum for at least 15-20 minutes, valves closed, pump off. If it can't, then a leak in some component, or gauge set etc. is possible.Before charging, be sure to purge the charging hose with refrigerant, that will insure no air or moisture are introduced in the system.It's best to charge through the HI-SIDE, or compressor discharge side, this prevents SLUGGING the compressor at start-up. Evacuating the system will not remove the lubrication oil, so careful measurement of oil in the compressor is important.An over-charge of oil will reduce the cooling capacity of the system, and possibly slugg the compressor.If you have had catastrophic compressor failure, or a system that has been down for years, then a flush to remove the contaminants, and old oil is in order.The condenser, and evaporator always retain some oil.Along with that, a new filter drier, and possibly an expansion valve replacement as well.Ya'll have a nice day, Dave.
