Don't rule out a loose timing set if the car has over 100,000 miles and
that hasn't been serviced. You can check for this by looking for a lag
in the movement of the distributor rotor while turning the engine over
by hand.

Hi Robin,
I would tend to agree with your diagnosis of a vacuum leak or a
carburetor issue as a surge is usually caused by a lean fuel condition.
The coil and control unit very seldom cause any problems.

I can't see how the temp gauge wiring interacts with the brake

In that case a fuse in the fusebox may have blown, and if the same
