Matt and Alan, You are right - this is VERY common in the 90's Imperial and also the Fifth Avenues, let alone the rest of the Chrysler lines. I had tried to put a high output Alternator in my 90 Fifth Avenue and it melted wiring AND the Ignition Switch. I later found out that Chrysler cut costs on the ignition switch in all of the 90's (at least until 95/96) on the ignition switches, even in the heavier duty trucks. Most of the after market ignition switches are more heavy duty than the repacement ones from Chrysler, even now. Have you run an ENGINE CODE readout? You can do this by getting in the car and closing ALL doors. Then cycle the key THREE TIMES from OFF to RUN and leave it in the RUN position on the third time. (DO NOT TRY TO START!) After a few seconds the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT will start to blink. COUNT the number of times it blinks. The codes are always 2 digits. The ending code should be 5 - 5. I do this on all of our 1990+ vehicles about once a month just to keep things running well. Boy! it would have been super if they had the technology to do it on the 1969+ vehicles.
