IML: 64 Imperial 'Pushbutton Transmission Controls

David;

I think Paul pretty well covered the pushbutton control issues most often encountered.  I have seen the same condition develop from two buttons being accidentally pressed at the same time (often due to someone just being clumsy).  The plastic buttons engage with a metal latching assembly which has the cable going to/from the transmission.  It may also be possible that come corrosion has developed that has caused this assembly to freeze up or the cable itself (more likely) has rusted inside its jacket.  One member years ago mentioned that there is a particular OD size of piano wire that can be used to replace the cable inside the jacket.  If the old cable lead is broken or rusted badly a replacement is in order.  Many of the suppliers listed on the club website could probably supply a complete assembly with cable if needed.  If just the center wire lead is needed, see if you can pull it out after soaking with WD-40 and measure the thickness of the wire or take it with you to a suitable steel wire shop in you area.
