ignition coil location



Hi,
I ask myself some questions about the ignition coil location: on
all old mopar the ignition coil sat atop the intake manifold;
this location is not perhaps the best for life of coil: ther's a
lot of heat transfered to the coil and i have some friends who
had ignition problems because the coil was (or became) bad.
 when i bought my '57, the coil was mounted on the fender well,
beside the washer bag. As i wanted an original engine bay i put
the (new) coil in its original location but i wonder if i did the
best thing !
I'm ready to do in 2 weeks a 1000 miles trip, i'm a little
anxious about that (and other things..).
Are the today coils heat-resistant (i've a "flamme thrower" coil,
bought with Pertronix ignitor) ? Perhaps a little heat shield
under the coil ?
In every case i put in the trunk a spare coil ..

And what spare parts do i put in the trunk tool box for a 1000
miles trip ? I'll put belts, ign. coil, perhaps a starter motor
as i've a spare. Do you have other ideas ?
