Thanks Kerry. This weekend I will attempt to fix it. Another gentleman,
Kerry Wills in SF sent me the following info which I will also try:
Squat and look through the grille and upwards in the center. There is a
2" manual paddle pointing down from the hood latch. A long screw-driver
is all that's needed to manually pop the hood.

Hal, Sorry to hear about your broken cable. Bummer. I suspect you can get
to it from below the gravel pan in front of the radiator. It will be a pain
but should be doable. You might also be able to reach the arm with a stiff
coat hanger with a hook in it. Doubt you will be able to pull the grill
without getting the hood up first.
