Yes, this should work just fine. Many high performance modern cars w/ V8's do exactly that. The reason they are doing it is so that they can have one oxygen sensor and/or one catalytic converter and save $. The only down side is that you lose a bit in sound "quality". Keep in mind that the exhaust restriction proportional not to the pipe diameter but the pipe cross section area. So, a 4" pipe is 4 times less restrictive than a 2" pipe. D^2 Quoting "A.
