The 80s Imperial didn't mimic the Cadillac. The bustle back Imperial was
already designed before the Seville debuted. It wasn't a copy, just two
takes on a trend, just as the Mustang didn't copy the Barracuda which
debuted earlier.
I'll agree that the way Chrysler ended the 90's Imperial doesn't bode well
for Imperials of the future, but remember that when Chrysler killed Cordoba
based 300, none of us would have predicted the success of the 300M.
