The Torqueflite transmission that was in the '57 Imperial was superior in every
way to anything built in its day. Putting up with the inconvenience of not
having "Park" is part of the fun of having and driving the older car. There is
nothing unsafe about it, provided that it is used properly, and the car is kept
in top shape.
The Torqueflite was built to last, the G.M. Automatic Overdrive transmission
(while good) was built to economize. I have two cars with the 200 4R G.M.
Automatic Transmission. Those transmissions are not known for their quality, or
longevity. When working correctly, they do work well, but cost double the price
of a Torqueflite to overhaul.
