The fine mesh screen in the fuel inlet is not super necessary, in my opinion - the lack of it is not likely to be the cause of your flooding. Just make sure you have a good filter in the line from the fuel pump to the carburetor, and you should be well protected from any remaining crud in your gas supply. Have you inspected the floats yet?
