1955 generator & power steering pump removal question

My battery is not getting a charge.  With engine running and when I disconnect 
the wires at the battery the engine stops.  It might be time for a generator 
rebuild.

Does the generator and power steering pump need to be removed as one unit, or 
is it possible to unbolt the power steering pump THEN remove only the 
generator.  I wanted to try and avoid disconnecting the power steering lines 
and a mess from the fluid reservoir.
