Bill, do NOT surrender those plates
if you do keep the car in your new
Las Vegas home. Tell the state of
Nevada you lost them, or whatever,
but keep them.  Also keep copies or
originals of any registration and
title documents you now have. Those
plates, and those documents, will
enable a future California buyer
(or YOU, should you move back) to
re-register the car with the original
black plates, which can be a real
added selling point to a potential
buyer, if he's a Californian.
