Since we are dealing with Imperials, I thought we were talking about Imperial
gallon!  :)

No, we were all talking about US gallon.  I suggested earlier the factors that
can affect mileage.  The dif gear ratio was also suggested, as well as the car
size (B bodies and such).  Obviously these are factors too, but since we were
talking about Imperials, I assumed we all have about the same weight and gear
ratios.  Other factors are winter/summer gas.  In the summer, the gasoline is
composed out of less volatile hydrocarbons with more energy content per gallon
(small factor).

Still, those claims of 16 mpg and higher are suspect of measurement errors. 
Even the for the lean burn it may be stretched (the higher compression of the
earlier engines will actually help gas mileage a bit).  The highest reported
mileage from road tests is of the order of 15.

But everything is possible I guess, I cannot rule out these claims with
certaintly.
