I have purchased flat rubber material at a local gasket manufacturing
company. They have lots of different thicknesses and it is usually a
bargain. I made new staples using some stainless steel welding wire I found
at a sheet metal shop. I took a 3/8" socket extension and clamped it in my
vise, then I cut a piece of wire about 2 inches long and used small vice
grips to clamp the center part of the wire to the top surface of the square
part of the extension. Then bend down each side to form the legs of the
staples. Cut one leg off a little shorter (makes getting pushed through the
rubber and steel easier), but leave them both long until you get them in
place and bent over about half way. Then use a body dolly and a small hammer
to fold them over the rest of the way. This takes a lot of time, but golly
it's pretty when you get it done.
