Re: [FWDLK] Torsion Bar

Torsion bars can get rusted into place over the last 40+ years.  If that is the case, you MUST NOT clamp onto them with a huge vice grips or anything of the sort to give you something to beat on.  Damaging the surface of the bar can cause a fracture and eventually the bar may fail.  There are torsion bar removal tools specially designed to clamp all around the bar over a considerable surface area which do not in any way damage the bar.  These can sometimes be found at a major auto repair / align shop or at a good Mopar service department.  With a deposit, they may be loaned out.

Other than that, y'all certainly would want to read the shop manual pertinent to your car before attempting this relatively simple task to be sure you have proper safety precautions in mind.

If the bar is not rusted in, this can be a 1 hour remove and replace for the pair of torsion bars.

Mackey and anyone else out there...

How do you get the torsion bar out?  I got the front nut off and the rear clips out, but the torsion bars are not moving at all.  I don't want to start banging on the front bolts, but that seems to be the only way they'll come out.  Does anybody have an idea.  If so, please give it to me.

Mackey, did you try Gary Goers for the bushings?  Kanter may have then also.

Hi All
Since the 58 Dodge Regal Lancer has been sandblasted and the body is off the
frame I am going to rebuild the suspension. The torsion bars bushings look as
though they could be somewhat difficult. Has anyone done this and what if any
problem am I going to run into. Does anyone have these parts available. Your
experience and knowledge would be much appreciated.
