All - I just changed the LCAs on my 59 Dodge, which means that I had to remove the torsion bars beforehand. FIRST, you MUST make sure the front wheels are off the ground to release the tension, as Joe says. The job is easier if you remove the wheels from the front drums. Then, remove the retainer circular clip at the rear of the torsion bar. The front of the torsion bar slips into the rear of the LCA. There is a bushing in the LCA that holds the shaft that connects to the frame via that large castillated nut with a square washer (this is probably what John P. is referring to). This shaft is not part of the torsion bar. You will need to wiggle the torsion bar around a bit to remove it, but it happens eventually.
