The shims are to allow for endplay in the axle shafts and should go back the same. You had best check the manual for the allowable endplay and then set up a dial indicator. Any grease on the bearings will affect your ability to read endplay correctly. The endplay allows for expansion during operation while maintaining the correct bearing to race interface. I believe it is about .025 but you need to check the book. Marv
