Hi Dave, You are correct that the speedometer cable output at the back of the tranny measures the rotations of the driveshaft. If you modify anything in front of the speedometer output, like the tranny gears, nothing changes. However, if you change anything in back of the speedo output (rear end gears, tire size, etc.), you can expect the speedometer to change and give inaccurate readings. To accommodate the different rear ends, tire sizes, etc used on the different automobiles, Chrysler Corp used different speedometer gears to drive the speedometer cable. These gears are typically some form of plastic and come with differing numbers of gear teeth on them. They are frequently different colors so that they didn't have to count the number of teeth on the assembly line -- just get a green one, an orange one, etc for the correct gear ratio to make the speedometer reading correct. These gears sometimes appear on ebay. They are probably available from some of the parts vendors too. Hi list, As is my understanding, a speedo merely measures driveshaft speed and relays said info to the driver. So what does one do if you change your transmission/rear end gears? ~dave '61 newport '67 Kaiser M-715 '91 Toyota Pickup Hemi: (hem -e) adj.
