In Vermont it is a crime. It is unlawful to remove or tamper with a vehicles identification number. A junkyard may remove them but must account for each VIN tag and send it with the proper paperwork to the DMV where it is than disposed. Obviously, no one is going to run out to anyones house or set up roadblocks for someone who has some old 1950's VIN tags though. Old VIN's are much like license plates, as even those are state property and are suppose to be returned when your through with them, but hardly anybody does.
I think not. The seller said, "For nostalgia only." No law against that. Just like selling a gun, it is how it is used that might be unlawful. I could collect vin tags (I don't) and hang them on my walls and that would not break any laws that I know of. <>Roy<>
