On a 1955 Dodge (Plymouth, DeSoto,
Chrysler and Imperial) there is a heater hose that runs from the engine through
the firewall to the heater temperature control valve assembly. A second
hose runs from the outlet of the valve assembly, back through the firewall
to the lower inlet on the heater core. Finally, a third hose
runs from the upper outlet on the heater core to the engine,
If either, or both, the valve asembly
or the heater core is faulty, someone has run a hose to bypass
them. If the heater core has gone, the coolant will be
leaking. If the valve assembly has died, it was bypassed to prevent a
constant blast of heat. Which would account for the fourth
hose.
The heater core probably can be
recored, as least if the the frame and outlets are still in good
shape. Any good rad shop can do that.
If the control valve is gone, some
have replace it with an inline valve from a plumbing shop, similar to
the one found on the water supply pipe to a
toilet. Controlling the heat temperature would be a little
inconvenient, but it would work until you found a new control
valve. Just make sure you get the correct pipe diameter to
match the heater hoses.

me) that the heater core is disconnected and the hose on the engine talking to
itself.
I also noticed that it appears
there are 4 hoses involved in what I would have thought to be a two water line
hose operatioin. What am I looking at?
