[FWDLK] why so many heater hoses

I noticed on my ‘55Dodge (new to me) that the heater core is disconnected and the hose on the engine talking to itself.

 

I also noticed that it appears there are 4 hoses involved in what I would have thought to be a two water line hose operatioin.  What am I looking at?  TIA
