Jim kraus PM'ed me, & quoted from a conversation that he had with Greg
Leggatt, of Napanee Ontario; Greg (un!-)arguably is the BEST 57-58 Dodge
restorer, and slavishly has devoted himself to researching correct
restoration procedures/details.
Hopefully, Jim's message will be included , below, but, if it's not,
Greg has confirmed that the OEM Dodge inner-fender & radiator core
support finish was gloss black "alkyd" (oil-based) paint, and, that the
reason why the under-hood paint might look less than
"2006-clear-coat-shiney" is due to the nature of that enamel paint, &
the wear and tear/heat degradation that its pigments suffered from the
engine compartment environment.

Neil,
One of our premier resources on the Dodges (Mr Greg L) says the '57 Dodges were painted with the front ends off, the 57Chryslers with the front ends on. Thus the reason for the body color firewall, black inner fenders and rad yoke (aka core support). We didn't talk Plymouth or Desoto.
He further noted that his research shows the black was a conventional full gloss alkyd enamel. It is thought that the less than full gloss or satin effect we see today is due to engine heat and age. Quality and amount of paint coverage probably varied lots. I also don't think too many people were waxing the paint under their hoods.
