Here's how I would've handled it:

Me: "I need a voltage regulator for my 1955 Chrysler."

 

Counter Idiot (Punching on computer keyboard): "Chryslers weren't made in 1955."

 

Me: "So what is that car that I am driving? It's right there in front of the store. Take a look."

 

Idiot: "I have no idea what that car is, but it can't be a Chrysler. You must be confused."

 

Me: Well, if I can prove to you that they did make Chryslers in 1955, would you give me the part for free ?

 

They usually change their tune after that.
