Re: [FWDLK] Hissy Fitting (to be continued)

I had a second conversation with Karp's, this afternoon (different guy)
and learned some more information, including: if the hissing sound
continues after the brakes are fully applied (like, waiting at a stop
light) then there probably is something wrong with the booster system.

If the hissing only occurs when the brakes are applied, but do not
continue on, when the pedal is max'ed out, then that syndrome is one of
general tiredness and is not something that is to be overly concerned
about.

Went home & fired-up the car and discovered/confirmed that the hissing
goes right on hissing unabated when the pedal is fully applied.

SO, it looks like my booster is going to be attended to by Karp's, for
$250.00---got the second gentleman to commit to that full O/H price,
sometime in the near future.

BTW, Karp's also installs sleeves into the orifices of single-pot master
cylinders, to prevent their potentially catastrophic leakages through
those orifices (like mine did do, around 1982-ish; barely was able to
use the E-brake to stop ; slow-actually, the car down from about 35mph;
all-of-a-sudden: no brakes!)

The Mopar power brake boosters, when mounted above the master cylinder, do
not inhibit the pedal pressure to the master cylinder. So if the engine
dies, or the power booster fails, the brakes are no worse than non-power
brakes. You just need twice the pedal pressure to get an equal braking rate.
No excuse for hitting police cars.

Modern power brakes are much different. If they fail, they require the pedal
pressure to flow through the booster to reach the master cylinder. The
booster has a big spring which you must also compress to get braking action,
so most people don't have enough strength in one leg to get much braking,
unless your name is Arnold and you are the governor of California. Mopar had
a better idea 50 years ago.

Funny we should be discussing Karp's (east coast) right now; over on the
FWDLK website, John
Fowlie just happened to write that his Karp's-worked bellows-type
booster just catastrophically
failed, and that he almost rear-ended a police car!

Karp's expressed surprise, upon hearing the news.
