Anyone know who rebuilds the harmonic balancers and/or how much they are? Would like to have the one done from our '62 300, while the motor is out. A question has arisen concerning the color of the kick panels in the front seat areas of your cars. Many (perhaps most) are the tan color of the paint on the dash, but at least a few have shown up with the black / dark grey kick panels typical of the 300 G. If you have an F with the dark gray kick panels (and they are original as far as you know) would you forward to me the serial number of your car? We are trying to associate the dark kick panels with some other factor, such as build date, so we can answer the question of the originality of these panels. Thanks in advance. Ain't the listserver wonderful? ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Message: 3 Date: Sun, 26 May 2002 11:15:07 +1200 From: "Owen & Jo Grigg" <ram300@xxxxxxxxxx> Subject: Camshaft durations Hi all Was talking about camshafts the other day with a good freind and experienced race engine builder about camshaft specs. He enlightened me to the fact, that by altering the valve lash by .001" of an inch on my 392, I will alter the duration of the cam by 3 degrees. So in my case if I move my valve lash clearance from say .012" to .013" I'm taking my 233 degree duration cam down to 230. Or decrease the lash and go to a 236 duration. He recommended a max of .003" alteration, but hey, that gives us 9 degrees to play with either way when tuning the motor to how we want it. Many of you on the list were probably already aware of this, but for those who were not, like me, I thought it was kinda interesting. Worth keeping in mind next time you adjust the valves...... My brother in law bought my 62 300 sport a few years ago and I checked the shoes on the rear axle for him last week end and they need replaced. NO ONE in this area has them or knows where we could find any. Short of pulling the old ones and having them re-lined in Billings (he lives in Miles City) I don't know what to do. Any one have a source I can get them from? Thanks in advance. Joe Pierce Joliet, Montana. Hi to all, I have never had a balancer rebuilt - yet. But, the other day, I had a 413 engine at TDC on a stand in my shop, and decided to "test" some balancers I had removed from engines over the years. Result of testing 6 balancers : two were accurate, two were off by ten degrees, one was off by 15 degrees, and one was off by 30 degrees or so. So, it isn't much good using a timing light to tune your engine if the timing mark is off ! Suggest testing your balancers by placing engine at #1 TDC using a piston stop device ( one can easily be made by busting out the porcelain out of an old spark plug and threading a bolt in the center of the remaining metal ) .
