Subject: 300 C fuel pump dramas & battery bracket trap

These two may help 300 C users.

1. Original fuel pump dramas - my car always lost the fuel if left
unused
for a period, it quicker to tip fuel down the rear carby to hurry it
picking
fuel up.

Then over last few weeks, it got worse. Pulled pump off (AC original I
believe) - rubber diaphragm looked perfect, put it back on, worked a while

but still bad.

Pulled it off again, looked closer this time - noticed one of ther valves
seemed to have a very weak spring, you could push little flat disc in it
very easily compared to the other.

Found a s/h Cadillac late 50s pump that had same valve body section,
unsrewed it, swapped it onto 300 guts - works perfectly, sucks fuel
quickly
after standing. I felt pretty pleased. But before this, dramas of my own

stupidity.

2. Over here in Australia 57 300s are not too common, likewise originasl
battery retainers.

So in a hurry, I mount an aftermarket single clamp type across the
battery.
The battery dies eventually, and in a hurry, I chuck another battery in,
it
a bit taller, so I do not worry about the retainer.

About three weeks later, crossing a railway line at about 35 mph, the car
dies, like it has lost ignition. Luckily I can coast into a car wash
about
40 metres ahead. By this time, the cabin is so full of electrical smoke,
I
cannot see. I grab the lead off the Battery, and then see what has caused

the problem. I have left the upright rod that come out off the fender
shield (Non original to fit non original retainer), and the bump has seen
it
fall vackwards and it has to be the exact correct length to jam on the
front
terminal of the voltage regulator - instant arc welder!!??

Like in about 15 seconds it had burnt/melted the heavy power wire running
to
the ignition switch via the ammeter, then the other heavy wire across to
the
light switch !!!!! About 3 hours hanging upside down under the dash
etc,
to rebuild/retape the wiring harness ??!!!

But now my 300 sings again, it always great to drive nearly it anywhere.

pps that new 300C in the latest club magazine looks nearly the most ugly
car ever, talk about using the ugly stick, what are those styling guys
smoking, taking!!??

Hello, I was just thinking of something and wondered if anyone knows if
Chrysler had the left right differences on the 300K for 64? I know my
Imperial had
that feature, and I have bought some black lug nuts for the car to be put
on.
I don't want the young guys down at the body shop to break off a stud when
the
car reaches that point. Anybody know for sure? Thanks, Greg

Hi Greg,

All left hand thread studs should have an "L" embossed into the stud end.

It has been my experience that the "L" on the stud
does not get paid any attention to in the fast-paced
tire and brake shops of today. You have to make sure
that you are there to warn the mechanics or installers
several times. Over-torquing is now a greater
possibility than before because most of the modern
cars call for upwards of 85 ft-lbs. on the lug nuts
instead of the 65 ft-lbs. we are supposed to have. The
installers sometimes forget to readjust their
pneumatic torque wrenches.

The car definitely looks like a 300K on the inside with the console etc,
but
look at the emblems on the c post. May be a 300 ordered with 413 and
console.
Also beware of the negative feedback he has. Caution is the best approach.

All Chrysler built vehicles had reverse thread nuts on the driver's side
of
the vehicle until 1971. 1971 was the year they changed to regular threads
all
around the vehicle.
I am not sure whether 1971 models were reverse thread but for sure 1972
models were. So all the letter cars are reverse thread on the left side.
It was Chrysler's idea of a safety feature for people who neglected
keeping
their nuts up tight.
We don't have that problem today because everybody has their nuts up tight

for one reason or another.

as far as i know the left side will be reverse threads as they are on my
65 I don't know about any of the others so be careful I have been looking
for the right studs to change my 65 over to all right hand threads but
have not been able to find the right lugs for my year

 good luck joe
