Subject: 300H front signal failure

Group!

Trying to get my 300H ready for Dayton.

Decided to fix the horn that hasnt worked since 1972.

Found the problem to be the ground switch with the little wheel on the
steering column. The horn works now but the front turn signal lenses do not.
The signals and all the lights worked fine before I stupidly did not leave
well enough alone.

The parking lights all work, the brake lights and rear signals all work, but
the front signals don't even light.

The horn ground switch is attached to the cancelation switch for the turn
signals - is that switch so fragile I might have caused this problem by
removing and reinstalling it?

Any help will be appreciated!

Thanks

That packet is insulation to keep the valve noise down.  There or not there,
your option.  Factory stock.  Be sure to soak the valve stems in Marvel
Mystery Oil or the witches brew of your choosing, then take a half inch socket
extension and a hammer and bang on the rocker over the valve stem to make sure the
valve moves.  You can tell the stuck ones because they don't make a boing
sound, rather a thunk sound.  This until you have chemicalled them into
submission.  Just finished replacing a seriously bent push rod in the second 383 in a
row that had sat for too many years.  Always a good idea to remove the valve
covers and perform the above soak, and hammer plan before starting the engine the
first time.  The previous B block spit out the valve lifter after bending the
push rod.  This kills all the oil pressure in the engine until you plug that
hole up with the errant valve lifter.  Current 383 retained the lifter but 8
cylinders working is better than seven.  Both push rods bent in exactly the
same place.  They are sort of the "Fuse" in the valve system.

This entails a great deal of work.  I added air to a 65 Fury and it helps a
great deal to have the two cars side by side or a stock air car near by for
reference.  You will need to make a newspaper templete of the factory holes in
the firewall so the air stuff under the dash can be installed.  Remove the front
seats and carpet, the existing heater core and mechanisms and determine how
you will cut the dash to add the spot coolers that the air cars have. I'd use
the existing radiator until I learned that it wasn't good enough later on.
Probably will be ok.  This job frustrated me but the end result was excellent.
You will need a new water pump, pulleys, idler , brackets etc.  If you don't
have a reference car to check where all the stuff goes, I'd probably not do the
conversion.

Subject: '63 Chrysler 300 Temp. Gauge Issue

Hi All,

This one is a little strange.  Here goes!

I replace the cluster on my 300 with a
cluster from a ''64.  Nearly identical.
New Claret paint and it looks great!

Everything works except the temp. gauge.

The gas gauge (with volt. regulator) works fine,
but the temp. gauge always reads cold (far left).

I attached 12V from the battery to the wire at the sensor on the
block and the gauge immediately went to HOT (far right).
This should mean the gauge is working.

After reattaching the wire to the sensor, I took
a continuity tester (with lamp) and the lamp
started flashing (like the directional flasher).
The temp. gauge slowly went up, but I don't
understand the reason for the flashing.

When I attached a volt meter, it went from
12V down to 0V back to 12V, as if the
current is shutting on and off.

The pos. terminal was attached to the wire
and the negative was attached to ground.

Any ideas?   Maybe a loose connection (ground?)
at the cluster, but what about the non-constant
current/voltage reading?

thanks-
Mark Lindahl

Itr might be easier to just get a dash from an air car, along with the rest
of the a/c stuff.  Since you are starting from scratch, you will need
everything, so why not just take the dash from whatever you find as a donor car?

Subject: 59 300E Temperature & Fuel Guages!

Hi Fellow Chrysler 300 Owners:

Before I start, I love my 300E I recently purchased out of San Diego.

Anyway, I have two minor issues with the guages:

(1)  The temperature guage never gets beyond about 1/4 - 1/3 the way towards
Hot.     I refuse to believe this beast can run that cool in South Florida;
and

(2)  As soon as I turn the ignition key the fuel guage needle jumps to full.
The way     this hog guzzles gas, I know something is wrong.  By the way,
what type fuel is   recommended for this big girl?

Thanks all!

Although I have all the necessary pieces to add factory a/c to my
recently acquired 300K I've decided to install some type of aftermarket add-on
system.  This because other than the ram engine there are virtually no options
(not even a radio nor a rear view mirror) and I want to somewhat preserve that
stark appearance as it left the factory.  Living in the desert, I have no
desire to restore a third car which has no a/c and since "dealer add-on" air
conditioners seemed to be pretty common out here I figured why not.

Anyway... has anyone added aftermarket a/c to their car using the
newer kits with the lightweight Sanden compressor?  I'd be interested in any
feedback.

Thanks,
Mike Laiserin

Hi Mark;
Call Rene Kroeger @ 515-314-1942. He's in the Seattle area right now, and
may be able to fit your bumper in, if time isn't a factor.

He has several trips booked to LA I think, might be able to p/u soon.

Hope you and many of the rest of y'all make it to the Fall Meet, Ray Jones

Mark,
Having the test light flashing is normal, the voltage regulator works not
unlike a like a flasher unit , it pulses the current through the gauge in
such a way so that the voltage averages about three volts. Sounds like the
regulator is probably working, touch your temp sender connection to the
block(or a good ground) and see if that makes the gauge move, if it doesn't
move try grounding the terminal on the back of the gauge in case the wire
to the sender unit is broken. Don't put 12 volts to the sender wire (it
works by grounding) that's likely to burn out the coil inside the gauge.

recently acquired 300K I've decided to install some type of aftermarket add-on

My F runs cool as well since I had the radiator recorred several years
ago. Haven't really driven my E for a year or so, but as I recall it
runs cool as well. It gets hot up here in Canada as well, 95F yesterday,
so I wouldn't worry about it. Certainly better than running hot!

Hi members....

Well... here is what i think about having the original color chip in
front of you!

When the tinter at the paint shop mixes it up he would have something to
"eye" match it to. I have seen several Mardigra reds!

Some too orange and some too brown. Some paint stores don't have the
older books anymore.

I checked out the website and looked at the colors for 61. Alot of the
colors didn't even look the same. Dubonet Metallic looked very brownish
in color. Nice for getting codes and names but as far as seeing what the
original color looks like....Not even close! Oh yea.... Check out
Toreador Red.

Just a thought from a signpainter!

Dan

One must remember that you are viewing the chips from that web site through
your monitor. Your monitor might not be reproducing the colors exactly!!

What Dan said.  Don't throw away those paint chips.  What you see on your
monitor is a function of the quality and how old your monitor is, your video
drivers, etc.  I have three monitors in front of me and they are all
rendering colors differently.

Just my 2 cents.

Ron

Subject: Fuel Sender Resistance

I've got a '64 300 with a gremlin in the gas gauge or the sending unit. I suspect that I have a bum fuel tank sending unit. With the wire to the sending unit removed at the tank, the gauge reads empty. With it hooked up the gauge reads hard pegged past full. Does anybody know the resistance values that would indicate for instance a half tank condition? I'd like to throw in a resistor to verify that the problem is indeed in the sending unit. The service manual only mentions a tester, no resistance values given.

Is there a source for replacement sending units? (Either NOS or aftermarket) Or does anybody know of a repair facility that I can send mine to?

Thanks,
