The batwing (GM term) or delta (Mopar term) air cleaners were all made by AC company and that is why they look similar: they ARE almost the same.

According to my information the 56 Desoto batwing which looks like the
one on Ebay will not fit over chry. carbs as the spacing is
different, also G.M. batwing or Packard will not fit.Cadillac batwings
have two small holes on top for chrome " V ".I was very interested in
this carb-batwing set-up but I don't think the batwing which is
definitely not a chry.anyway will fit over carbs. Johnnie Slayton

Hi Group:

Just got home from the annual Atlantic City Classic Car Show and Auction.
Only 300 offered or sold was a nice '62 sport which went for $20,000.00.

While there, however, I ran across a service which you might find useful,
if you are looking to buy a car somewhere far from where you live. The
company is called "Buyer Services International, LLC," and they are headquartered
in Hartford, CT. Their website is at www.BuyerServicesInternational.com These
guys will inspect a car anywhere in the country for a set fee around $400.00
with six page report involving 100 questions and a dozen photographs of the
car. It could cost more if the car is really out in the boonies, as there is a
mileage charge for anywhere more than a 25 mile radius from one of their local
offices.

They also have another service, called "Hi Bid" www.Hi-Bid.com which
will track auction results at the push of a button. The cost is $30.00 per
year, and you can find the value of your car by auction (Barrett-Jackson versus
Kruse), by high price, by low price, or by almost any standard you wish. You
can also see auction results by make, model, price, or a variety of other
standards. This looks like a cheap way to keep abreast of what your cars are worth
in the auction market, and to let you know what is out there and for how much.

Just a thought in case y'all might be interested.

Almost 60 degrees here, so I took the D convert out for a spin. Top down?
But of course! It had't been started since late November, but it ran like a
charm. Not a drop of tranny fluid leaked out of the freshly resealed
Torqueflite. Damn, that's a great car! Sorry 'bout this, but I had to tell somebody.

Hi Group:

Does anyone have a set of bumper guards for a J/K? I think they are the
same. They only have to be good enough for replating. I have a set but they
are very rusty and I am hoping for something better to have replated.

Thanks,

I had to take my G convert for a ride today as well, but with the top up, as North of Boston it was barely 50. I just wanted to warm up the fluids while I had the chance, as March and April can both be iffy months for old cars.
We may still get a fair amount of snow in March, and everyone knows about April showers.

Was happily working in the warm sun on the '62 300 today when I stupidly
dropped a nut into that secret area where the intake meets the head (on the
drivers side).

It's the U-shaped opening in the center of the head/manifold.

Is there a secret to fishing things out of there? I have been trying small
magnets attached to fishing line, to no avail.

Any thoughts? Or do I need to pull the intake off?

Thanks!

I have compared the Caddy and C300 dual quad air cleaners side by side and
indeed they are different in contour and so on. But I think I recall that
they will both fit on the carburetors and are thus interchangeable for a
non-show application. Both the 55-57 Caddy and the 55-56 300's took a pair
of Carter 4 barrels as standard - and I THINK they were thus equally spaced
by the intake manifold. In 58 Caddy went over to the triple dual design
(three 2 barrels).

But alas - it was a long time ago when I did this.

Sean.

Hello All,

Jeff Webster from this company has been advertising on my American Dream
Cars www.americandreamcars.com web site since July 2001. A text link for
his company is on each "cars for sale" detail page. Never one complaint in
all that time so he must be good. Believe me if any of my visitors had
trouble with this service we would hear about it.

In my experience this is an excellent company to do business with. I wish
I had other advertisers like this company.

Regards,

Nancy Kramer

You could try to flush it out with a blast from an air hose, or bend a hook
out of some small gauge wire. Left to my own devices, I would just get
another nut to replace it and leave it there, it isn't going anywhere and
its presence down in that hole won't cause any problems.

Hi Russell,

Welcome to the Club and to the listserver - online group.

Here's my personal reply to your specific queries; some other members might
have other insight:

1/ Steering wheel - you have two choices, as far as I am concerned: send
yours to Dennis Crooks at Quality Restorations
http://www.qualityrestorations.com/
for a complete R&R (expected cost about $1200.00 ? ) or wait awhile for
Michael Burke to get the 'Swedish Connection' rolling - when that happens,
your cost will be about $700.00 for an exchange wheel.

2/ Steering box : just take yours out and send to Steer & Gear, 1000
Barnett Rd., Columbus, Ohio, 43227, 1-800-253-4327 . I have used them many
times. Their turnaround is extremely quick. Your 300G should not be laid
up for more than two weeks.

BUT - how do you know the steering box is a problem? if you have excessive
play in the steering, it could be caused by something as dumb as a $5
bushing. Indeed, there is a rubber U-shaped bushing located between the
steering shaft and the box, where the two meet. To visually inspect it, you
will have to remove the steering shaft outer tube, to expose the inner tube.
E-mail me privately if you need instructions. When the rubber bushing wears
out, it can cause a LOT of play in the steering. New bushings can be
ordered from Gary Goers (www.garygoers.com)

3/ Side quarter emblems seem to be somewhat of a problem right now. Also
query Gary Goers as far as those.

4/ Console parts: Gary Goers sells the console inserts (ribbed stuff) ; as
far as the outer anodized aluminium runner / strips, the 6 pieces should be
taken off (4 long and two short butt-pieces) and sent to Marcos Cielak at
Ano-Brite: http://www.anobrite.com/ for polishing out the scratches, and
re-anodizing.

Hope this helps. Once again, welcome to the Club !

John Hertog

You could try to flush it out with a blast from an air hose, or bend a hook
out of some small gauge wire. Left to my own devices, I would just get
another nut to replace it and leave it there, it isn't going anywhere and
its presence down in that hole won't cause any problems.

Until I can go to the grocery store and see something besides a parking lot
full of SUV's, I will have no sympathy for those who wish to blame their
gasoline woes on the big bad oil companies.

I paid 35 cents per gallon for gasoline in 1957 when the average USA wage
was perhaps a 75 to 100 dollars per week. Now the average is probably
closer to 750 to a 1000 which is 10 times as large. Seems that gasoline has
gone up 5(or 6 in some areas) times(a large portion of that being tax
increases--or do none of your remember when you did not pay sales tax on
your gasoline-- from our out of control government and no one is calling
them greedy--such as some call the oil companies) and wages have gone up
some 10 times. Incidentally a new Corvette was about 3000 then and is
50,000 now. That is about 16 times.

I paid a 1000 dollar gas guzzler tax on my Jaguar XJR. Perhaps treating
SUV's and none business use Pick Up trucks the same as automobiles(also for
safety standards and requirements, bumper height standards, emissions) and
taxing them the same penalty would cure some of the foolish ardor for these
vehicles and leave enough fuel to go around so that we all may benefit with
lower fuel prices and help keep us out of foreign entanglements.

Yes before someone lets me know about the high fuel use of our 300's(and
other such old cars) they are not used on a regular basis and probably
contribute little to our increased overall fuel costs, smog and dependency
on foreign oil.

I just put on my cast iron jock strap to protect me from the wails that I am
sure are forthcoming. I am weary of the continuous fusillades against big
oil and the corporate greed they display everytime gasoline prices
increase(often for refinery problems, the world price of oil, stupid
government regulations on MTBE or Ethanol, cold weather, a ship sinking
somewhere etc). Another piece of advice for those who believe that the oil
companies are ripping you off. Invest your 401k and IRA monies in oil
stocks and with all your excess profits your fuel prices will not look so
bad.

We have seen the enemy and the enemy is us.....Pogo
