Speaking of smokers, does anyone have any recommendations on cleaning
and restoring the insides of yucky automobile ashtrays? I don't think
that tar is soluble in aqua regia. I was able to disassemble the one in
the front of my C-300 so I could wire brush it, but was not satisfied
with the results.

I've successfully used acetone to dissolve old tar deposits in
automobile ashtrays. On the other hand, if you're having the ashtray replated,
I'm sure the plater's stripping process will take care of things. Good luck.
