Re: [Chrysler300] Mopar vs Bowtie.....Group Effort

The new LT Camaro/Firebirds are quite formidable. I've seen street driven examples go 13.50's and race prepared cars go 10's. Where did the 2.345 second handicap come from? You may have your hands full. The secret is to not spin the tires on the starting line. The torque that the 413 produces will be lost. I suggest that you beg, borrow or steal a set of low profile 10" Slicks on Chry or Ford rims and get in a few practice runs before the showdown. Find a small diameter tire shorter than the stock tires, 26 in diameter. Don't go in cold turkey or the kid will eat you alive, he's most likely been practicing and knows his car. Many drag strips have Wednesday nite test and tune sessions. Practice leaving the starting line at various RPM to get the best 60 foot time. Try different tire pressures. Learn when to mash the throttle to get a good reaction time. If you start your race before him (reaction times in the .510-.520 range are hard to beat) you stand a much better chance to win. Put new plugs and points in and set the timing 2-4 degrees advanced. Make sure the carbs open all the way. Change the oil, fresh oil seals the rings and produces less drag. See if K&N makes a size that will fit your air cleaners, if you remove them leave the bases on the carb to help airflow. Let the trans shift by itself so you don't over rev in low. A good F would go 15.80's when new on street tires. Remember, old age and treachery will beat youth and exuberance every time. Good Luck. Larry Johnson

Here's the bet between Father and Son. On the 12th, at Sears Point Drag
Strip, my son has bet me that his 2001 Camero with a 2.345 second handicap,
can still beat Our (I say "Our" because all of our reputations are at stake
here) 300F in the quarter mile. It's computer engineering verses old-style
torque and carbs. If any of you (Verity, Riehl, Hertog?) have any
suggestions, don't keep them to yourselves. Should the pup whip the Old Man,
he and the bride take the C rag to the wine tasting country, I win, they go
to church with me on Fathers Day and cook breakfast. Seems to me that the
Camero might do a 13.90 plus 2.34 equals
16.24 to beat. Air cleaners on? off? RPM launch? Just roll out and then
punch it? Shift with buttons? Timed for max with too much pinging? Amount
of air in rear tires? Open to any and all suggestions as a lot of people
will be watching.
