I was told by a person that follows auction sales , a good deal of the cars
that go to auction, are put on the block just to keep a value in the car,
not to sell. They are bid up to just below the reserve price by fake bids.
The seller takes away a proven value for future sale from the auction and
that's about all.

Maybe others can comment if this is true or not.
