I never changed the trans fluid in my first 300K, and owned it from 97,000 to 120,000 miles (ex-Bruce Brownell-owned--anyone seen it? It's Roman Red TT-1 with an aftermarket full white vinyl top- scored 810 points at an '80's Club meet with an undetailed engine compartment - possibly in Vermont or New Hampster-:] ). No trans troubles. I had the same experience with a '63 Newport, bought w/39,000 original miles, sold with 140,000+, never any trouble with the transmission either. 
It has been a different story with my Venture minivan - it was bought with 16,000 miles, and fluid changes were done at 50,000 & 75,000 miles, and a trans rebuild at 93,000. Since then, I have added a trans cooler and changed the filter & replaced the fluid with Redline full-synthetic every 15,000 miles. Overkill? Maybe, but since then, I've towed a K from Wisconsin to Florida with it, and a K from Alabama to Florida and a '64 Newport T&C just across the state. 
The van now has 179,000 and the transmission works perfectly, despite being pressed beyond its limits. Another Venture owner said they rebuilt at 70,000, and the main culprit for failure was HEAT. The multiple 'modern' plastic parts (not commonly found in Cast-Iron or 727 Torqueflites) had MELTED and no longer performed their intended function.
