Perhaps I have missed something here.  I believe the best solution is to use 
one of the two connector cables that come standard with the Battery Tender. 
I would tap it somewhere on your car(either directly at the battery cable) 
or any appropriate safe positive and negative point that is convenient(you 
would have to do the same with a cigar lighter that was mounted anywhere 
outside of the auto).  Then I would just plug the Battery Tender into it as 
required.  The plug is as convenient as a cigar lighter and I think is 
probably more reliable and safe(ends are waterproof very durable and are 
fused).  I would leave the pigtail hidden up behind the grill somewhere and 
be easily grabable(new word) when needed.

Works great on my vehicles and is super convenient.
