RE: [Chrysler300] 300Fs with alloy vents

If the not so common 300F cowl/wiper vent panels are indeed alloy, and as no one else has offered much progress re how/why this was, it has occurred to me (I think) that about this time I remember (I think) that in magazines such as (USA) "Saturday Evening Post", either one or two US Aluminum Companies (ALcoa, Reynolds) sometimes ran large adverts re how aluminum was coming to your car soon in a major way. I cannot remember what this adverets pictured, but I seem to remember the inference/(statements?) were that all major US Automakers were using more aluminum - maybe Chrysler decided the easiest bit of one of their cars to use (satisfy Alcoa, whomever?) was the 300F vent panel - much easier, less structural, than say a fender, and less engineering rework than if tried to use hood or trunk ??!!

This is total supposition on my part - I throw it out there for more knowledgeable people in the US, if they remember/know more ?!

Christopher in Australia,( where those of you 300 Member farmers, 300 owning graingrowers, who ask I say - the farming weather here is looking worse for most of winter grain/farm areas of Australia - in ongoing drought, (now rated as 1 in 100 year), last year's shocker of a season that started with excellent 3-4 inch rain, so far only about 10-30% of that, and main national major river irrigation dam now only 8% full versus last year still had 18% !! - not too many new 300s likely to be sold to winter grain growers this year so far, although national 300 Dealer run outs under way on them as new update on sale soon, that including the popular 300wagon version sold here - my 'user' 300C is again featured in national major "Unique Cars" monthly mag 1 page color feature on 300s.

The vents on my F (still on) and the F cvt (I had owned) were "stamped" anodized aluminum, not cast. George Riehl

What intrigues me most about this piece is how it came to be. We may neverknow, but a clue to its significance lies in how these unusual alternativeswere fabricated. A stamped aluminum plenum substitute makes for a curiousoffering on its own; for whatever reason. It may be the result of amanufacturing run experiment, or as a low cost high-impact marketing idea. But a zinc die-cast (white metal alloy) plenum cover option would begfurther explanation. Duplicating an otherwise perfectly adequate metalstamped piece would be the result of convincing debate on someone's part:something that was thought out, justified and funded. Die-cast tooling hasalways been expensive. So, are these oddities die castings, or the easier-to- rationalize anodizedaluminum dress-up alternatives to body-colored steel? Aluminum and whitemetal can both be referred to as non-ferrous alloys. Those who may have a grille off their car or whatever, please look at theunderside of the piece for evidence of mold ejection pin markings or ageneral heftiness to the piece: these castings would be thicker than sheetmetal.Ed JSan Mateo, CA-----Original Message-----From: Chrysler300@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:Chrysler300@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] OnBehalf Of christopher beilbySent: Sunday, May 11, 2008 7:10 AMTo: Larry Nirenberg; lettercars@xxxxxxx; chrysler300@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx: RE: [Chrysler300] 300Fs with alloy ventsJust guessing from afar, but with late 50s - early 60s hot rodders - it wassometimes a pretty common thing to simply dress up a car a bit above others- by chroming the wiper/cowl vent panel - so maybe Chrysler offered twooptions - standard 300F one was painted same body color, or if you wanted ita bit more dressy/flash, then you( or a Dealer?) could order one that lookedchrome/sporty, but it was actually alloy ??! (If they were chrome, one maysuspect owners did it or maybe Dealer, but in alloy, this had to be factory, and deliberate ?!) If price list shows alloy item, my guess is it would havebeen dearer/extra cost/price. Anyone have a price list ? (And if it not abig seller, that maybe why it only a one year option?)Pontiac's early 60s GTO was supposedly born/influenced by what people weredoing to or with their cars - Chrysler likewise would have been aware ofwhat people did to make their cars a bit fancyier/sporty etc?
