My opinion:
As has happened many times in the auto industry and others, GM will buy Chrysler to eliminate that part of the competition.  Chrysler has something like 25 billion in cash in the bank too.  Those are the principle benefits.  The Chrysler brand and Dodge brands will be killed.  Buick and Pontiac may well both disappear soon also.   They will lay off tens of thousands, close several plants, keep the best minivan product built in the world (presumably badging it as their own), keep or spin off profitable Jeep and raid other plants for facilities or equipment they need.  They will also raid Chrysler's technology and engineering departments again keeping what they need in people and knowledge and tossing the rest.  I have not heard how the Cummins diesel contract works out in this but the Cummins is the best diesel in any pickup sold in America.   But will GM survive?  Or Ford?   I said five years ago that the original US auto industry would be dead in ten years.  I stand by that.
As a US taxpayer, my question is what happened to the 25 billion dollars that the Congress just spread around GM, Ford and Chrysler about 3 weeks ago in the midst of the credit crisis and barely made the radar screen of the US media.  
Like famous Senator Everett Dirksen from Illinois once said: " A million here, a million there, and pretty soon we're talking about real money".  Except today it is "A trillion here, a trillion there......"
