If these aftermarket units do not have vacuum advance capability, then they may be useful for acceleration gains assuming you have fuel with sufficient octane, but I wouldn't use them personally since the loss of vacuum advance will dramatically increase fuel consumption and add to addtional heat from excessively retarded timing under cruise conditions, a bad trade off in my opinion.  I bought a Mallory tach drive distributor many years ago without vacuum advance, and used it for one week, then took it out.  It sits on the shelf still.
