Re: [Chrysler300] '63 Chrysler 300 Torqueflight rebuild

Rich,
all '64's are aluminum case. There are internal differences in the build between a Ram engine and standard engine trans. I think Don Verity and George Reihl could go into the specific details.

Having just bought a 1964 Chrysler 300K convertible, I’m beginning the learning process. Were some of the K’s equipped with aluminum TorqueFlites and some with cast iron? Were there some different parts in the two different cases? Were there different parts in the K trannys and other Chrysler trannys that year? I think someone indicated more clutches in the K trannys.

I haven’t received the car yet, but know I will need a front header bar for the top mechanism and all interior panels in black. Another question: Was there a leather interior option or was leather interior (seats only?) standard? Are the side panels always vinyl?

I’ll have to sell our white ’55 C-300 after I complete the mechanical restoration of the Krag. VIN of Krag: 8443149233 VIN of C-300: 3N551198.

I know by experience on the manual aluminum case transmission there is a very serious problem after the first rebuild ; In that the case becomes warped for some reason and the shift can jump out of gear especially from first to second where the most torque is applied. It was found that bushings did not help and there was no apparent way to realign the case.
Could this perhaps happen in the automatic as well. We were never certain if it was normal ware or some fault in the remanufacture process.
Comments would be appreciated.

Mark,
Was it built back to 300 specs with the correct # of clutch discs etc.?

Sounds like an adjustment issue also.
Check the kick-down and wide open throttle (WOT) and the cable adjustment

Hi All,

After a recent rebuild of an aluminum '63 torqueflight, I noticed the
following changes.

1) When reving the engine in neutral (with the park lock off) the vehicle
moves forward slightly. When reving the engine, the transmission seems like
it is only engaged about 10%. When reving the engine for about 10 seconds,
the car moves about 4 feet.
Is this a cable adjustment issue, rebuild issue, or non-issue?

2) The trans does not chirp between 1st and 2nd gear under full throttle
like it used to before the rebuild. The shift between 1st and 2nd is not a
hard shift like it used to be. They convinced me to rebuild the trans
although it seemed to shift pretty well. It had been 21 years since the last
rebuild, but only about 35000 miles.
Could this be a throttle linkage issue or something else, or non-issue?

All other aspects of the trans seems to be fine.

Thanks in advance for your comments.
Regards,
Mark Lindahl
