Loren is correct.. the low/ reverse band applies in manual low , intead of going throught the over running clutch... in d /break away the trans uses the over running clutch. sure does sound like the over running clucth to me too. . i have the tool to put the rollors in the hub . this tool is a must when installing the springs and rollors in the cast iron torque flite.... drop the trans pan and i bet there is a bunch of fine metal in the bottom of the pan.....bob hayen 406 752 5152 Quoting Loren Nelson : Jean, It sounds like a bad overrunning clutch. My G did that when I bought it. As I recall, I could start in Low, manually shift to 2nd, and I believe when I got the speed up it would go into Drive, but I'm not sure. I drove it, manually shifting, for a year or two. The overrunning clutch is a group of rollers that lock the engine to the drive shaft when under power, but when coasting, allows the rear wheels to turn the drive shaft faster than the engine. I rebuilt the transmission and put new rollers in the overrunning clutch about 30 years ago, so I have forgotten some details. I do remember having to make a tool with dowel rods to reassemble the overrunning clutch. I don't like to be bearer of bad news, but I doubt this can be fixed with an adjustment. I have finally got my 300D on the road after a year in hibernation. Fresh engine (less than 250 miles on it), with the tranny checked out at that time by a local shop (he does know 50's cars), with new seals and gaskets and good bill of health. When I drove the car over a year ago, it wouldn't shift into 3rd gear, but no issues between 1st and 2nd, both directions. We did a slight linkage adjustment at that time, but due to my health issues didn't have the time for a test drive. Fast forward to last week: went for a test drive, but now the transmission slips (to the point of not moving the car much) in "D", even from a dead stop. When either 1 or 2 are pressed, it works great. No issues in 2nd gear at speed, and will downshift from 2nd to first on its own. Is this a cable adjustment issue, or do I have a more serious problem? Any input will be greatly appreciated; I really don't want to pull this unless I absolutely have to. The shop I have been using (one man shop) is top notch, but only works on units out of a vehicle, no exceptions. Thank you, Tom in sunny and already very hot Tucson, Az [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ------------------------------------ To send a message to this group, send an email to: Chrysler300@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to bob@xxxxxxxxxxxxx or go to http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/Chrysler300/join and select the "Leave Group" button For list server instructions, go to http://www.chrysler300club.com/yahoolist/inst.htm For archives go to http://www.forwardlook.net/300-archive/search.htm#querylangYahoo!
