I had a 62 Sport with aluminum TF that did the same thing. It would drive just fine, but every time I stopped I had to start off again by pushing 1 and then 2 before going in to drive. The tranny never failed, but I did do a swap after a while as it was fun for me, but the wife didn't like driving it that way.
