Mark, My '64 Newport has a fine mesh screen fit over the end of the fuel pick-up tube in the gas tank. As it set for a long time the screen became partially clogged by gum formation from the old fuel. When that filter is clogged it is common for the engine to get sufficient fuel for just a few minutes after setting idle for a while but then it will begin to starve as the demand for fuel is greater than the available supply rate. It sounds to me as if you need to check for free flow from your tank to the electric pump and then maybe also to the main pump. Many years ago I worked on a '69 Grand Prix which had essentially the same trouble, but it was from fuel contamination, not from gum formation. It was equipped with a "sock" instead of a screen. ------Simple solution, not so simple diagnosis----.
