Dave,
The fender inner panels were in place during the body drop. Carbs
were on and a "shoehorn" was used to squeeze the engine assembly into the front
clip assembly. Filler panels were put in later, I think. I can't
remember whether the air cleaners were on or not, even though I stood there in
the factory and watched them assembled.
I do seem to remember that some parts of the cross-ram assembly were broken
during early attempts to mate them.
