Some have had good luck with stainless. Joe was of the opinion that unless one has the correct and more expensive cylinder hones for stainless that it can be a problem.

His take was that if you look at a stainless cylinder under a microscope that the little metal “hairs” sticking up can and do cause premature wear on the cup seals. With brass, it is soft enough that the cup seals will “lap” those hairs down where stainless will not.

His other issue is that people use regular stones on the stainless during the next rebuild and that leaves a much more pronounced “hair”.

So, If I were to go stainless, I would talk to Brush Research in LA and see what they may have to dress a stainless bore to deal with what Joe was talking about.

Now all that said, this may be splitting hairs. But I have had a brand new seal fail in the last 20 years and it was not pretty with the hills here in San Francisco. So the bore finish is important.

Hi all, hope you are all doing well. I have a bad wheel cylinder on a 62 300 to deal with. I had a set of good replacements in my parts stash but my basement was flooded with 5 feet of water and now they are no longer usable. I was thinking about sending them out to whitepost or similiar to be sleeved. I remember my uncle having some issues with them on different occasions and just wondering if anyone had any input on having this done, is it worth it, and where to have it done if I was to do it.

Thanks for the wealth of information I recieve from the club. Its very helpful.
