I agree with Dave. The new style filter is more effective than the original steel screen. The fact that they only used them 3 years points to this.

Also, unless going for concours details, you could forego this filter completely, as far as I know.  The Dacron filter normally used say in 1964 will screw right into the bottom of the 62 727 once you drop the pan.  Maybe Don V has an opinion on use (or not) of the inline filter, and whether any mods (like an extension tube) should be used with the Dacron filter.

And I mean the factory style with the threads at either end.
