Hi Ken, I don't think your problem is the fuel pressure. Did you replace the
float bowls with end hung floats or center hung floats. Sometime the float
will drag on the rear metering plate (especially with center hung floats)and
hold open the needle and seat. If this is happening you can sometime just
bend the float mount a little and cure the problem. If the rear is flooding
and the stock carburetor still has the equalization tube between the bowls,
it can flood both ends of the carb. I build carburetors on the side and have
ran into that a number of times. Good luck with it.

Hi Rich,
You are probably right, but I don't understand why?  I have a new stock
fuel pump and rebuilt a factory carb.  The pressure wasn't too high when
the car first rolled off the line, why would it be too high now.  Do
aftermarket cams change the pressure?  I can throw a regulator on it,
but I don't want to just cover up some other problem.

I gotta believe the pressure must be too high. I always used a pressure

Good news and bad news.
The good news is that we finally got our semi-rebuilt 440 started
(without its mufflers) for the first time.  After the 318 this sounds
great.

The bad news is that it only ran for about 15 seconds before fuel
started coming out of the bowl vents and I had to shut it down.  I
replaced the needle valves again and adjusted the float level down as
far as I could and again, the same thing happened.  I am using a stock
fuel pump and a Comp cam.  Are the Comp cams ground to stroke the fuel
pump more and increase fuel pressure?  My fuel pressure gage is being
pegged at 8 PSI.

The carb is the stock 1972 Holley that came with the 440 to which I
added adjustable float bowls.

Anything special I should be looking for?
