After 9 months of work covering 200-plus hours (and more money than I
care to mention), and countless tips and suggestions by list members,
the 383 I rebuilt as the famed "Roadrunner" engine, fired today! It
sounds downright scarey--granted, the manifolds are open, but a bit of
acceleration revved it like a racecar, and made the sweetest of sounds.
I ran it in place for about a half hour, and will try to take it out for
the first spin tommorrow. After driving a 6-cylinder Checker Taxicab for
the last 10 years, this is a different beast. Wow! Smiles all around.
Even one of the neighbors gave me a hand as it drowned out his TV.

Before the first ride, I want to take a moment to thank all of the
members who have helped with this project over the last few years, and
they are many. I want to single out for special recognition: Gary
Wilson, Earl Helm, Wally Breer, Gary Hamel, John Goodman, Brent Stewart,
Jim Cargill, Don Dulmage, George Smith, Fred Phaup, Bill Watson, and
others whose names I've forgotten, but not your help.

Some of you have sold or given me parts, allowed me to bug you by email
and phone, and been patient with many of my newbie questions. My first
engine rebuild is done, and I could not have done it without you.
Thanks--this Beer's for You!! See you at Mopars on the Mississippi.
