Compare and contrast the two marketplaces (swap-meet & Ebay):

At a swap meet, an initial high price is given and then a lower price
is negotiated. On Ebay, an initial low price is given, and then a higher
price is "negotiated" through bidding. The swap meet deal can
sometimes provides a psychological satisfaction of "I got it for less!",
even if the final price is the same in both markets.

The positive aspect of having the Ebay marketplace, and I think it far
outweighs the all the negative aspects, is that there are so many
more parts on the market that never would have been available without
otherwise. Its *common* for me to be asked, when I'm wrenching parts
at local junkyards, "are ya gettin parts to sell on Ebay?" And the
amazing impact of this is (1): Yes I am! and (2): so is he! (or at
least he is familiar with the concept...). And these are parts that
would have otherwise been crushed, or perhaps never used. Instead,
people are introducing these parts into the marketplace. Lets face
it, old cars in junkyards are getting few and farther between for all
of us. and swapmeets and junkyards are nothing short of regional
markets. Someone in New England (go Sox!!) might hunt far and wide
at yards and swap meets for, lets say, some 65 Coronet convertible
trim. Unbeknownst to him, I just pulled some from a local yard in
Georgia. He decides to travel to Carlisle (one of the few national
marketplaces). I decide to bring the 2-3 pieces of trim with me.
what are the odds that we will hook up?? slim... unless we both
wear placards that say "buy/sell 65 Coronet convertible trim (2 pieces!)...
If it were a fender, or a hood, sure! we'd talk... but small parts???
If I go back to GA with the parts, will I run an add in Hemmings or MCG
for maybe $20-40 worth of parts?.... unlikely... If I put the parts
on Ebay, *someone* who needs them will find them. otherwise
they 1) never would have been pulled off a junkyard car to begin with,
or 2) had they been pulled, they sit in my barn until next year's
Carlisle....

2nd point: Is the rising cost of parts an effect of Ebay or the
increasing popularity of 62-75 Chrysler products in the Collector World?
I proffer that prices are higher, not because of the Ebay auction process
or the fact that its a world market, but more so because Mopars are
much more collectible now than ever. How do I arrive at that? go
look at Ebay for 1) parts prices for AMC products *especially*
non-AMX stuff, 2) parts prices for 46-55 Chrysler parts, 3) parts
prices for Hudsons, or 30s 40s Nashs... Those guys pay much lower
prices for parts that are more scarce.

I do agree that Ebay doesn't spell "bargain". BUT as a seller, I feel
confident that I can get fair prices for parts that I decide to invest
time and money in for resale (junkyards, parts cars), and as a buyer,
I feel confident that I can find those hard-to-find (once seemingly
impossible-to-find) parts for my cars *AND* I know that if the price
is too high, I can wait because another will come up for sale eventually.

BTW: I prefer to sell and buy @ Carlisle, but thats only once a
year.. :-)
