I agree with Jim, but I have one thing to add: I had the brakes done at a local auto shop on my 64 one time because I didn't have the time, and they didn't replace the hardware. So not only were the springs really crappy, but one of the shoe keepers in the back came off while I was coming to a stop light! It had the exact same symptoms that your 65 does. I'm not saying this is the problem but it could be. When one of those shoes comes off, it makes a lot of noise, and your brake pressure and fluid slowly disappears as the wheel cylinder pops too far out. Scary as hell I'll tell ya. I got my money back from the shop, and they offered a free oil change. Yeah right, like I'm gonna let them touch my baby again. That's a bunch of bull.

Brent,

Definitely start with a visual inspection of the wheel cylinders. Next,
you might want to try bleeding the brakes ... first bleed the master,
then the rest of the system with the wheels off the ground, turning each
wheel a bit before you pump the brakes. This will a) prove that the
wheel cylinders are functional, and b) verify any blockage in the lines.

In retro, it's probably a good thing (although scary) that you were
cutoff on the highway ... could have been a lot worse if you discovered
the problem at a stop light!

Regards,

Jim
