Neil,

when i checked the slop in my 66 satellite poly.  i turned the crank 
manually until the distributor rotor began to turn.  at which point, i 
turned the engine in the opposite direction and watched to see how long the 
rotor took before traveling in the opposited direction.  in my case the 
rotor just sat there for a bit as i turned the crank in the opposite 
direction.  and mine did not move at once, so i decided to change out the 
timing chain.  upon breakdown, mine was real loose.
if you chain is good and tight, the rotor should change direction as soon as 
you change the crank direction.
clear as mud huh?
