So then when the prongs for this plug were coming off in my 64 dodge, why were not only the lights, but the engine quitting also as I was going down the road? Fixed this and it solved the problem.

The big plug on the back of the instrument cluster is for the lights and
gauges.  Should not affect ignition as the wiring for the ignition switch
and the alternator gauge are separate from the wiring in the plug.
Headlights and windshield wipers are also separate from the plug.

There is a starter relay in the system.  If you check the starter you will
see there are two wires - one from the battery and the other to the relay
Make sure all those connections are clean and tight.
