No, models introduced in September started production in early August, sometimes at the very end of July. And production ended in late July, although a couple of years extended into early August and in bad years ended in early July. The 1940's and 1950's had model year beginnings and endings all over the map due to WW II, Korean War and the rush to get the Forward Look cars of 1955 and 1957 into production.

So a car with a scheduled build date of June 21, 1968, for example, would be a 1968 model. And a 1968 model with a build date of June 21 would have been built June 21, 1968. Similarly, a 1963 model with a scheduled build date of June 21 would be June 21, 1963.

And when Chrysler switched production, the assembly lines came to a halt while the plant switched to the new model year. Downtime varied from a couple of days for 1951 to 1952 to a couple weeks, if major changes were being done.

It was not a matter of rules, but a combination of a number of things - the number of items changing (from trim to complete bodies), alterations/expansion to the plant and facilities, when new powertrain items came on line, and even the sales (or lack thereof) of the model year coming to a close.

The only "rule" was that the model year change should take place around the beginning of August, at least from 1959 and on

To confuse the issue-- since new cars were in the showroom in September, could they start production by June 21st? And 68 Roadrunners were so popular they may have extended production on them --also the 1969 were not that much different, so would have been easy to switch over production of them fairly late I don't think Ma Mopar played with hard rules! Just a thought :<)........................MO........sw iowa ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Mullins" <johnedod@xxxxxxxxxxxx>

I'd say it's 63. I've got a 68 road runner with a July 68 build date.
